The opening address by Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, is expected to be the highlight of day one of the 2015 PNG Advantage Investment Summit, which begins today in Brisbane.
More than 400 senior executives, SOE executives, government policymakers and Cabinet ministers from PNG, Australia and across the region will attend the two-day summit at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
‘The summit aims to showcase business and investment opportunities in PNG across all sectors for the economy sectors including petroleum, mining, agriculture, business and finance,’ says conference organiser, Andrew Wilkins.
The first day of the summit will focus on investment opportunities, while the second day will focus exclusively on infrastructure and transport.
Speakers at the event include Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, Deloitte Digital’s Peter Williams, Bank of Papua New Guinea Governor Loi Bakani and IPBC Chairman Paul Nerau.
‘The effects of the oil price downturn, and the impact of China’s recent turmoil means that business people will be keenly listening to Prime Minister O’Neill’s speech,’ says Wilkins.
The speech will be followed by an economic update from the Secretary for Treasury, Dairi Vele, and later in the morning, the Governor of the Bank of PNG, Loi Bakani, will provide a central bank update.
The afternoon session, ‘PNG’s next wave of gas development’ will feature all five of the major players in gas—ExxonMobil, Oil Search, Total, the National Petroleum Company of PNG and Repsol (formerly Talisman).
Building Papua New Guinea’s infrastructure (including roads, power, telecommunications) is the focus of day two, when key speakers will include Paul Nerau (Chairman, Independent Public Business Corporation, David Wereh, (Secretary, Department of Works), Robert Hancock, PNG Ports, as well as Digicel’s Maurice McCarthy and Telikom’s Michael Donnelly.
This year’s event, the fifth, is being co-hosted by Business Advantage International and the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
